Toyota Tacoma 4 cyl question?

I am looking to buy an ext. cab toyota tacoma pickup in the '96-'00 range and need some opinions about the 2.7 liter 4 cyl. engine. Some of them that i drove seem underpowered and have trouble driving at highway speeds (75 mph up north here) in 5th gear is this normal? It seems like the tacoma is geared too tall for a four cylinder engine. Also i would like some input on the 3.4 liter V6.
