J.D Salinger is mad?

I am currently reading the novel "Nine Stories" by J.D. Salinger. I get that all nine stories connect in some way... and i understand the themes and all that jon... but i dont' understand why in every short story why he uses the words feet and ankles and crossing... ? and what doest he color green represents
